Type of project:

Concept project answering to the brief given by Ebow during ICAD Upstarts programme. I was responsible to create a solution and had one meeting with the assigned tutor before presenting the project to Ebow.

Context and problem:

The challenge was to explore innovative ways to speak to 20-35 years olds in Ireland about blood donation. The message could be either to galvanise existing donors to give blood more regularly or drive the recruitment of new donors. The medium of choice was wide-open, print, video or any format that is relevant to the proposal, and the audience should be directed to a fictional website blooddonation.ie

Design process and outcome:

My motivation to answer to this brief was really high. While searching for blood donation campaigns I didn’t see an effort in the usual blood donation campaigns to engage donors in a long term, transforming this generous act in a habit. I didn’t want to design some creative campaign that would generate awareness of the issue for a limited period and I was curious to know why people don’t usually donate blood. I asked a few young people this question and I got answers such as: “I don’t have time”, “I donated for a friend/relative after I saw they needed blood”, “I don’t know where to donate/ the procedure/ if I can donate”.

But there was one conversation that made me have the idea for Good Heart. A friend of mine said that he used to donate blood in his country regularly after donated for the first time to help a friend’s mom. When he registered on the hospital he found out that his donor card could be accepted nationally in some places in a similar way student cards use to be accepted to receive discounts (as in cultural admissions). So I wanted to propose this encouragement to Irish people donate blood more regularly. I then created an easy, informative and enjoyable app that could speak to the young people, help hospitals receive donors more efficiently and benefit local business.

Update: For this quick project there was no intention and time to develop a process of UX design. One year after this project I got interested on the subject and started learning about the whole UX process. What you will see next is how I envisioned my idea at that time of Upstart programme and how I imagined the needs of users and flow while using the app.
